How to Send a Fax from Your Chromebook

ChromeOS has no built-in fax support. No fax software. No fax modem drivers. But you do not need any of that. Open Chrome, go to OneFaxNow.com, upload your document, enter the fax number, and pay. Your fax is delivered in minutes — from any Chromebook.

Why your Chromebook has no fax option

If you just searched "how to fax from Chromebook" and came up empty, you are not alone. ChromeOS is designed around the browser and web apps. It does not include any of the fax infrastructure that older operating systems had.

No Windows Fax and Scan

ChromeOS cannot run .exe programs. The Windows Fax and Scan utility does not exist on Chromebooks.

No fax modem support

Even with a multifunction printer connected, ChromeOS can print and scan through it but cannot initiate a fax.

No Google fax service

Google Workspace includes Drive, Docs, Gmail, and Meet — but no fax feature. Google Voice does not support fax either.

Extensions may be blocked

School-managed and enterprise Chromebooks often restrict Chrome Web Store extension installs. Fax extensions may not be available.

The solution: Use a browser-based fax service like OneFaxNow. Nothing to install — it runs in the Chrome tab you already have open.

Step-by-step: fax from your Chromebook

1

Open OneFaxNow in Chrome

Open the Chrome browser on your Chromebook and go to OneFaxNow.com. Click "Send a Fax" to open the fax form.

Nothing to download. Nothing to install. No Chrome extension. No account to create. You go straight to uploading.

2

Upload your document

Click "Choose Files" to upload from your Chromebook. You can pick files from:

  • Downloads — files saved locally on your Chromebook
  • Google Drive — files stored in your Drive account
  • USB storage — external drives or flash drives

Accepted formats: PDF, DOCX, JPG, PNG, TIFF, TXT. Upload up to 15 files (50 pages total) per fax.

Google Docs tip: Go to File > Download > PDF in your Google Doc before uploading. This preserves all formatting and gives the best fax quality.

3

Enter the fax number and your email

Type the recipient's U.S. or Canada fax number. The form auto-formats as you type — just enter the digits.

Enter your email address to receive a delivery confirmation when the fax goes through.

Optional: toggle "Add Cover Page" to include sender and recipient details and a message on the first page of your fax.

4

Pay and send

Review your fax details — number, email, page count, and price — then click "Pay & Send".

Pay with Google Pay for the fastest checkout, or use a credit or debit card. Your payment is authorized but not charged until the fax is delivered successfully.

Pay-on-success guarantee: If the fax fails after 3 automatic retries, the authorization is released and you are never charged.

5

Track your delivery

After payment, you'll see a live status page right in your Chrome tab that updates in real time: Sending → Delivered.

  • Watch transmission progress live in your browser tab
  • Automatic retries if the line is busy (up to 3 attempts)
  • Email confirmation when delivery is complete

Chromebook faxing tips

Export from Google Docs

Working in Google Docs? Go to File > Download > PDF before uploading. The PDF preserves fonts, margins, and images exactly as they appear on screen. See our Google Docs fax guide for more details.

Use the ChromeOS Scan app

Need to fax a paper document? If your Chromebook is connected to a compatible scanner or multifunction printer, use the built-in Scan app to save it as a PDF, then upload that file to OneFaxNow.

HIPAA for healthcare Chromebooks

Medical offices using Chromebooks for cost savings can toggle HIPAA mode before sending. You get encrypted transmission, auto-deletion of files, audit logs, and an instant BAA.

School-managed Chromebooks

OneFaxNow works directly in the browser tab — no Chrome extension to install. This means it works on managed Chromebooks where your school or employer restricts extension installs.
