Fax IRS Form SS-4: apply for an EIN

Apply for an EIN by fax if the free IRS online application is not suitable. Use your own return fax number if you want a faxed reply.

IRS sources checked October 13, 2026. Verify current instructions before sending.

Before you send

OneFaxNow cannot receive the EIN by fax. If you cannot provide your own return fax number, check the IRS online application or another IRS application method.

What Form SS-4 does

Form SS-4 applies for an employer identification number. The IRS offers a free online application for eligible U.S. applicants and recommends using it when possible. Fax is another IRS-supported method when online filing does not fit your situation.

Check the form before faxing

  • Check the free IRS online EIN application first. Eligible applicants can receive an EIN immediately after completing it.
  • Complete and sign Form SS-4. Use one application method for the entity rather than submitting duplicate applications.
  • Provide a return fax number that you control if you want the IRS to fax its EIN response. OneFaxNow sends outbound faxes and cannot receive the IRS reply.
